Two PhD and Two MSc Positions in HIV Bioinformatics:


I have the pleasure to announce that the South African National Bioinformatics Institute is in the process of selecting South African candidates to fill two PhD and two Masters positions in the institute.
 
The training program involves the analysis of HIV-1 genomes and the development of bioinformatics applications. 

The prospective supervisor, Dr. Tulio de Oliveira, has been conducting high-level HIV bioinformatics research for the past ten years and will provide the student with advanced training in bioinformatics and HIV biology.

Furthermore, Dr. de Oliveira has a strong collaborative research network with top institutes in the world including the Universities of Oxford, Harvard and Stanford. The student will be given the opportunity to participate in these research projects.


The PhD and Masters positions provide students with the following opportunities:

1) conducting cutting-edge research in a HIV bioinformatics in a stimulating and internationally-competitive environment

2) actively participating in prestigious international research projects

3) academic supervision by renowned world experts in bioinformatics research

4) substantial bursaries (PhD R80,000, MS R45,000)

5) home internet access (subject to academic performance)

6) attendance of international conferences and to undertake visits to our overseas collaborators (subject to academic performance)


Eligible students:

Eligible students should have South African nationality and have a relevant background in any of the following disciplines: biology, biotechnology, medicine, engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science or similar. Ideally we are looking for candidates equipped with good computer programming skills, with an interest or a background in biology and/or biologists that are familiar with advanced computer systems.
