The workshops is aimed at junior faculty, senior technicians, post-masters or postdoctoral fellows with training/experience in Parasitology/ Microbiology/Molecular Biology, and a career interest in molecular epidemiology of parasitic infections.

Description of workshop:

This will be a 5-day intensive lecture and laboratory-based course on the basic principals and techniques used for molecular epidemiology of enteric opportunistic protozoa.

Techniques to be taught will include extraction of DNA from stool/tissue, PCR, PCR-RFLP, preparation of samples for DNA sequencing, sequence analysis and use of these methods for detection, species determination, genotyping and fingerprinting of isolates.


Draft curriculum:


Day 1 (16 of February): Introductory lecture on Molecular Epidemiology:

  • Methods lecture on DNA extraction from stool
  • Lab on DNA extraction from stool, estimation of DNA concentration and agarose gel electrophoresis


Day 2 (17 of February): Lecture on principles of PCR
  • Methods lecture on practical aspects of PCR

  • Set up PCR reaction; agarose gel electrophoresis.


           Day 3 (18 of February): Lecture on Restriction Enzymes/RFLP

  • Methods Lecture on RFLP

  • Lab on PCR-RFLP


Day 4 (19 of February):Lecture on DNA sequencing
  • Methods Lecture on sequencing of PCR products, cloning

  • Lab on preparation of PCR products for sequencing


Day 5 (20 of February): Lecture on analysis of DNA sequence, Fingerprinting
  • Demonstration of DNA sequence analysis, multiple alignments etc.

  • Sequence analysis
