prevalence in Africa:
Since the identification of HIV-1 in sub-Sahara Africa in the early 1980s, the epidemic has grown dramatically spreading from Central and East Africa to the Southern countries where it is currently the most predominant of all the countries affected. Sub-Sahara Africa represents a small fraction of the world's population (UNAIDS, 2003) and yet it is the region with the highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS. The top ten countries with the highest number of infected people in the world are in sub-Sahara Africa with countries in the Southern region most affected (Table A). Countries such as Botswana, Swaziland and Zimbabwe have prevalence rates that are >30% and have subtype C as the major circulating subtype (Table B).
